The Growing Threat of AI-Generated Images in Scientific Research

How Researchers are Addressing the Challenge of Fake Data Created by Generative AI

As generative AI tools become more advanced, the technology’s potential to mimic scientific data with astounding accuracy is raising alarms in the scientific community. Publishers and integrity experts worry that fabricated data, AI-generated images, and even entire manuscripts could flood journals, risking a surge in misleading or fake research. The difficulty lies in identifying these fakes; while AI-generated text is often detectable, images and data are harder to spot, and publishers are moving cautiously in response.

Integrity specialists, such as San Francisco-based image-forensics expert Elisabeth Bik, argue that AI’s role in producing scientific images should be minimal, given the high risk of false representation. She believes that allowing AI to create raw scientific data could lead to unintended consequences, with fraudulent figures potentially bypassing traditional quality controls.

This challenge has led to an “arms race” between those creating AI-generated figures and the developers of detection software. Emerging tools like Proofig and Imagetwin are using AI to uncover integrity issues in scientific images. For instance, Proofig recently launched a feature to identify AI-generated microscopy images, showing promising initial results with high accuracy. However, according to its co-founder, Dror Kolodkin-Gal, continued refinement is essential to meet the evolving sophistication of generative-AI tools.

Some researchers worry that this technology may not keep up with the rapid advancements in AI image generation. Kevin Patrick, a well-known scientific-image analyst, demonstrated how quickly tools like Photoshop’s AI features can create realistic yet fake scientific visuals, such as tumor samples and cell cultures, often in under a minute.

To combat these risks, some publishers are introducing stricter policies. For example, PLoS has revised its guidelines, requiring authors to disclose AI use transparently, while Springer Nature is developing proprietary tools, Geppetto and SnapShot, to monitor images and text.

Further protective measures are also under discussion. Some experts suggest that raw data used in scientific images should carry an invisible watermark, ensuring authenticity. Others, like Patrick, warn that the research community must act swiftly to develop standardized protocols for image verification, or risk seeing AI-generated fakes becoming an ingrained problem in scientific literature.

Despite these concerns, many believe that future technology will eventually make it possible to detect today’s AI fakes with ease. As Patrick notes,

Fraudsters might be able to fool today’s processes, but it’s unlikely they’ll evade detection indefinitely.
